Abstract:

Photoemission is the most general method for investigation of the electronic band structure of solids and solid surfaces. By performing time-resolved two-photon photoemission spectroscopy with femtosecond pump-probe pulses, we can also create excitations and follow their time evolution due the charge transfer, electron-electron, and electron-phonon interactions on femtosecond time scales. I will discuss the fundamental processes in metal surfaces that have been investigated in several groups in Japan, Germany, and the USA, including hot electron relaxation, surface state spectroscopy and lifetimes, adsorbate electronic spectroscopy and desorption dynamics, collective plasmon decay into single hot electrons, etc. I will finish with our recent work on coherent 2D photoelectron spectroscopy of multiphoton photoemission from metal surfaces.
